Dr. Mogire is a board-certified cardiologist and internist at Carle Foundation Hospital in Illinois. He teaches at Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Before America, he practised medicine in Kenya for eight years. He founded House of Mastery to help people finish the work that is theirs.

The label that did not hold
I grew up in Sengera, a village in Kisii County. The word people used for me was ekerentane. In Ekegusii, ekerentane means the unwanted child. A man named Raphael adopted me, and the label did not hold.
The label still taught me a habit. The habit was to win what they are watching, in case they changed their mind. So I won, for decades. And all that time, what was mine, the work I loved, waited.
Maybe someone gave you a word like that, at home, at school or at work. A label you never chose can teach you the same habit. A wound is information about what happened to you. A wound is not information about who you are.
In April 2015, already a doctor, I spent one last night in the grass-thatched hut in Sengera where I had lived through school. That night I decided to live by intention, one day at a time.
Eight years of medicine in Kenya
I practised medicine in Kenya for eight years before I trained in America. The rooms had few resources and long queues, and often no specialist down the hall. When I reached residency at the University of Kansas, I arrived a veteran. Kenya was preparation. Kenya was never background.
After Kansas came a cardiology fellowship at the University of Oklahoma. Today I practise at Carle in Illinois, and I teach at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.
September 2024
After fellowship I was offered $800,000 a year. In September 2024 I walked past that offer. I chose a lower salary in central Illinois so I could practise medicine on my own terms, and keep time to build, write and teach.
I am still a cardiologist. I am also finishing what is mine. House of Mastery is where I help you finish yours.
What House of Mastery is for
House of Mastery is not a school for achieving more. House of Mastery is a school for finishing what is yours. Nobody is watching your own work. That is why your own work is unfinished.
You finish what is waited for. Nobody waits for your own work. So the job gets done, the family gets fed and the staff get paid, and the plan you wrote in January has not moved since March.
We give your own work a date, a name, and someone who asks. Until you can give your own work all three yourself.
One finished thing is the first step. The goal is a different way of living. Your own work moves in the same week as everyone else's, and you keep your word to yourself.
Many things start the pattern. The pattern survives when your work has no structure. Keep your explanation. This page is about what finishes the pattern.

Built for home
House of Mastery is based in Nairobi and built for East African professionals and the diaspora. The programs meet live online, and once a year the House meets in a room in Nairobi.
KOORA, the House's six-month program, takes its name from the Ekegusii gokoora, to finish. The House uses Ekegusii words on purpose. The way of knowing behind those words is what the whole House stands on.
