A Mirror

Read each question slowly. Sit with it before writing. These are not questions to answer quickly.

Question 1

Name the case, decision, or moment you are currently reviewing after the fact with information you did not have at the time. Is the question you are asking of your past self a learning question or a prosecution?

Question 2

What is the difference, for you, between accountability and self-torture? Name a time you mistook one for the other.

Question 3

When do you take off the role? What are the conditions under which you are simply yourself, not the function? How often do they occur?

Question 4

What would the attending who clocks out look like for you specifically? Not in principle, but in the actual choices you could make this week.

Weekly Practice

Read one of these each morning this week. Before the phone.

Day 1 I noticed where my role became my identity.
Day 2 I asked who I am when I am not on call.
Day 3 I let myself clock out, fully, once.
Day 4 I stopped letting the pager define me.
Day 5 I reclaimed a part of myself outside the job.
Day 6 I let someone meet the person, not the title.
Day 7 I am willing to be more than my role.
