The coat you can hang up
I was forty-one years old before I asked myself who I was when nothing was on fire.
The question arrived in a quiet apartment in Illinois, months after I had left a role that had been providing the fire for years. I did not like what the quiet revealed. It revealed that I had been using the emergency to answer a question the emergency was not equipped to answer: Who are you when no one needs you?
You built something real inside the fire. I am not saying that what the crisis taught you is false. I am saying the coat is optional now. The forge built the shape. You do not have to keep standing near the forge to prove the shape is real.
This week, practice one hour of genuinely unstructured time without filling it with urgency. Just an hour. Notice what arrives in the quiet. That arrival is information.
The next chapter is the one I have been looking forward to writing since I started this book.
